New Theory: Spencer Pratt Is Charlie Bodell's Evil Twin

Spencer_pratt_heidi_montag_2

I have never seen a full episode of The Hills. My hatred for Spencer Pratt and severe dislike for Heidi Montag* is purely the result of being immersed in pop culture and stems from the fact that they are part of pop culture in the first place. Their fame just adds to my general angst.

* I can't really bring myself to hate Heidi since I'm fairly certain she's as vapid as she seems and, you know, that's not entirely her fault. I hate Spencer because he's totally using her since, although he is not much brighter, he is astute enough to realize that he has no skills or talents and needs to do something to maintain his d-list lifestyle. Enter the pretty girlfriend and the pimp-like boyfriend act.

Like Catherine, I watched Jezebel's clip of Spencer's lunch with Heidi's mom, in which he ups the smarm to unprecedented levels and calls Heidi's mom, "my dear," when Mama Montag is like, "I don't know if you've noticed, but my daughter, bless her heart, is kind of an idiot and you're kind of an exploitative, manipulative barnacle and could you maybe BACK THE FUCK OFF?"

After watching that, I wondered how Heidi's mom had refrained from cracking a wine bottle off the table and slicing Spencer's face. And I wondered about the current concept of celebrity in America and blah blah blah.

But mostly I wondered why Spencer's nasal drone sounded so familiar. Suddenly, it came to me: Charlie Bodell.

Who is Charlie Bodell? He's Nicolas Cage's character in one of my all-time favorite movies, Peggy Sue Got Married. Charlie is sweet and doofy and kind of talented and totally, TOTALLY in love with his girlfriend, Peggy Sue (Kathleen Turner). Charlie dreams of becoming a famous singer, marrying Peggy Sue, and living happily ever after as rock n roll royalty.

In the movie, Peggy Sue has traveled back in time (sorta) and of course attempts to do things differently. Charlie is shocked by some of Peggy Sue's odd behavior, particularly her sudden interest in sex.

As we see, Charlie has his dreams, but mostly just wants to do whatever will make Peggy Sue happy. In other words, he is the polar opposite of Spencer Pratt. But despite their yin and yang personalities, they do have one thing in common: that voice.

Am I right?

Peggy Sue is a guilty pleasure for me, but I cannot get over the stupid voice. From the beginning the whiny-ness of it then at the end, the gruff, "smoked too much" voice. And I always have to chuckle when they pan out at the end of the hospital scene and poor Nic Cage is wearing white pants and you can totally see his tighty whities underneath. And yes, you are right. Pratt is a pratt.

I'm sorry but That Photo! Could their mouths BE opened any wider?
They seem to think that huge chasm mouth=look how happy we are! Right? RIGHT?

Urrgg.

Oh, holy fuck. I hadn't watched that clip of Spencer and the mom until now. What an ASSHOLE. How did she not kill him on the spot? How? She has WAY more self-control that I would have had.

WILL SOMEONE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PUNCH THAT DOUCHE IN THE FACE? HATE.

DianaCLT

Totally inappropriate to say, but I'm thinking their ability to open their mouths so wide has something to do with how they've achieved any level of fame (even D-list) in the first place.

Amy

I totally woulda stabbed him in the face.

Sonia

I was just short of a grand mal seizure during that lunch date with Pratt The Prick and Heidi's mom. I agree..... how did she not MAIM HIM?!
