Kate Winslet FINALLY Wins a Golden Globe, Fan Girl Snarky Amber Is Happy To Report (Two Days Later)

Kate_doublefisting_globes

Sunday night, Kate Winslet, seven-time Golden Globe nominee, walked home with not one but TWO Golden Globes. This is worth remarking upon for a couple reasons:

1. It took FIVE previous nominations to get her there.
2. She was up against some pretty amazing women in both categories.
3. OMFG I LOVE HER! ALL CAPS!!!! SQUEEEEEEEEEE!

So anyway, about that Best Actress acceptance speech...

Kate Winslet has been catching a lot of crap for both forgetting Angelina Jolie's name and telling Leo DiCaprio, who is not her husband, how much she loves him and has loved him for 13 years.

Well, much like another winner from Sunday night whom I love so dearly, I'd like to tell the internet haters to suck it, on both counts.

Count the first: I've only been nominated for Golden Globes, um, let's see.... none times. So, I don't have first-hand experience to draw upon, but I imagine that when you've been nominated five times for an award and never won it, you get into a routine at these events to cope. You put on your "oh, I'm happy for her!" look, take a sip of your champagne, and get ready to bitch with your date when the cameras are off you. Then suddenly, out of nowhere, you hear a name that sounds very familiar. A lot like YOUR NAME, in fact. If you think, under these circumstances, in front of a theater full of your peers, with cameras broadcasting live nationwide, that you are going to be able to deliver an acceptance speech without notes and not falter...well, you're either far more capable under pressure than most people or very deluded. The woman practically needed to be carried to the stage she was so shocked.

I also don't think Angelina Jolie, who owns three Golden Globes and an Oscar, was all that peevish about Winslet's brain fart on her name.

Frankly, I thought her flustered, near-hyperventilating speech was one of the more honest, appreciative, and endearing acceptance spiels I've seen since Sally Field's "You Like Me!" speech.

Count the second: Oh come on, can we please put this "heterosexuals of the opposite sex can't be platonic friends" bullshit to rest? It's juvenile.

Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio have been best friends since Titanic, and it has clearly been an enduring and important friendship. Furthermore, anyone who has acted at all knows that you are only as good as a) your script and, b) your costars. As Leonardo was not only her dearest friend for more than a decade, but also the costar of a movie that is largely about two people and their crumbling relationship (translation: lots of shared screen time) Kate's outpouring of affection for Leo was completely appropriate. What incenses me is I know, if Leo were a woman (rather than just a very pretty man) starring opposite her, no one would have batted an eye at the showering of praise and adoration. But since she's a woman and he's a man, it's "inappropriate". Sam Mendes didn't seem to have a problem with it, so I gather the only parties who ought to be concerned are cool with it and the haters should focus on whoever the fuck styled Renee Zellweger, because WTF!?

I must reiterate how excited I am to see one of my favorite actresses has finally gotten some shiny gold to put on the mantle next to her husband's Oscar, Golden Globe, and trophy case full of Tonys and other awards. If you missed it, both acceptance speeches are below.

I admit that when I was watching it live on Sunday I thought it was odd that she went on and on about loving him. It was a little awkward and I held my breath until she remembered to thank her husband (with many fewer words than she used for Leo). But I didn't think that she was going to jump off the stage and make out with Leo or anything. I think she just wonders why he never wins for anything either, and wanted everyone to know how much she admires him.

So my final verdict is: awkward but not innappropriate.

Amy H

ahem...inappropriate...

Robyn G

She is stunning, and charming, and honest. Totally love her.

Also, and this is not a criticism of Amber, but the internet haters - she didn't forget Angelina's name. She briefly forgot who else was in the category. Big difference, and so not a big deal. And the Leo thing? So honest, and sweet, and not inappropriate. So yeah - suck it, haters.

Just when I thought there couldn't possibly be more reasons to want to be Kate's friend, there she goes, winning two incredible awards in one night and poof! She becomes even more endearing than before! I thought both her speeches were the perfect combination of saying what she needed to say (thanking the HFP and the producers and such) and saying exactly what she WANTED to say (love to her husband - "Sorry for being so mental...", love to her children - "thank you for coming on this journey with mummy" and to one of her best friends - "I've loved you for thirteen years"). As for forgetting the name of someone who I'm not sure she's actually ever met, and according to IMDB hasn't ever worked with, I think when accepting an award it's much more important to thank the people that really matter to you than to thank the people who you're "supposed" to thank.

She is one of my main girl crushes. Way more than Tina Fey, even. I just love her.

Diane

I looked at the whole forgetting Angelina thing as the same as trying to name the 7 dwarfs in 20 seconds. We all KNOW all of them, but you're still going to forget one every. single. time.

jodifur

I think she is just all class and I want to be her friend.

kristy

Totally NOT inappropriate. Their friendship is so sweet, sincere and endearing and totally comes through in the interviews they've been doing together for this movie. She and her husband seem to have a great relationship - which I guess is why she's able to have such a nice friendship with another man.

Regardless, that woman is an amazing actress - it's about damn time she won an award for it!

I didn't see the first acceptance speech (will watch when I get home from work) but the 2nd one made me even more a fan of hers. She said something about 2 men in her life before she started about Leo and I think she just got caught up in the emotion. She was as heartfelt and loving towards her husband as anyone I've seen and I thought it was so great. (end of gushing)

Rachel

I think she is ADORABLE. Everything she said was heartfelt and she FINALLY got her moment. It was sweet. And Angelina didn't seem to care...she just chuckled right along with everyone else.

Suzy Q

I love me some Kate Winslet, but she was totally over the top with her fluttery second win acceptance speech. This is only the freakin' Golden Globes, after all, with all of about 85 people voting. If you're the slightest bit foreign, you win.

The whole thing seemed like an orgy of ridiculous self-love to me, moreso than any other year. Perhaps I'm a bit jaded.

Glad she won and all, but good lord, ratchet it down a bit, Kate.

lolismum

Sorry, can't stand her. Could not stand her in Sense & Sensibility, her break out movie and wanted to shoot myself during Titanic and found her acceptance speech not sincere but cringe worthy. I am married to a Brit (who actually does like her), but her mannerisms and choice of words fits a certain English profile that screams, "put on sincerity" from miles away. The whole speech made me coil. How is that for dissenting opinion? Sorry Amber.

Moo

Not even remotely inappropriate. She's a sweetheart, and wow, that second speech brought a tear or two to my eye! I love seeing people so happy and so grateful.

Elizabeth

I'd be curious to know how many other actors have won both Best Actor/Actress and Best Supporting Actor/Actress Golden Globes in the same year. That's a pretty amazing accomplishment!

Wouldn't it have been awesome if Neil Patrick Harris had won? I can just see him up on stage saying something like "me being up here is legen...wait for it...dary". But sheesh, he was up against Tom Wilkinson in "John Adams". TV should get it's own category.
