Zune's Epic Fail

Zunetattoo

It's at least a little comforting to know that I don't have the biggest headache in the world today. That honor undoubtedly goes to whoever is in charge of handling the epic fail of Zunes over at Microsoft.

Microsoft has always had a tenuous grip on the mp3 player market, since going up against the ubiquitous iPod is rarely an advisable task. But after thousands of 30 GB Zune players started spontaneously crashing last week, I'm wondering how much longer they have left.

Theories on the crash included planned obsolescence to encourage users to buy new models and perhaps a virus. But apparently the problem was with the player's internal clock getting messed up by the leap year. I really don't understand why a date mix-up would cause the player to crash, though. Anyway, now that it's January 1, the Zunes are starting to right themselves, though many users will need to take extra steps to get the players back in working order...if they haven't already gone and bought and iPod.

Hmph. All I know is that I never had this problem with my Pocket Rocker. There was no fear of losing all of my music since I kept all of my Belinda Carlisle cassettes on my charm necklace.

I have a Zune and I love it, I bought it after my year old iPod's hard drive failed, Apple said "Sucks to be you," and I remembered why I f-ck-ng hate all things Apple.

I've never had a problem with my Zune. I love it. I'm gonna go snuggle it right now.

the Zune meltdown would be an especially tough break for people who bought defective X-Box's too

This is the second time I have heard a Pocket Rocker mentioned in less than 3 hours... scary scary!

Gotta love Microsoft. My BIL had an old XBox 360. He downloaded something onto the XBox so it could go onto XBox live, and it caused problems with the system - it would no longer work. He called Microsoft - their product, their website - and they said they couldn't fix it because the warranty had expired. However, if he bought the $99 extended warranty package, he could then ship it to them and they would fix it. For free. How sweet of them!
