Chris Brown Withdraws from Kids' Choice Consideration
So, someone decided to do the right thing. Even if it wasn't Nickelodeon, who still stands behind Chris Brown after he withdrew his own name from the Kid's Choice Awards. Thank G-d. Because otherwise Mamapop's collective heads may explode.
As of Tuesday, an online petition had received more than 5,200 signatures from fans asking that both Brown and Rihanna be removed from the list of nominations. And the fact that they asked for Rihanna's name to be removed, head exploding again.
That's right, in domestic violence there is a long history of blaming the victim. Rihanna totally shouldn't win an award because Chris beat the crap out of her. Makes total sense.
His spokesperson issued the following statement:
"Chris very much appreciates the support of his fans and the honor they have paid him in the way of nominations for Favorite Male Singer and Favorite Song," says the statement. "Unfortunately, the controversy surrounding the incident last month has shifted the focus from the music to whether he should be allowed to be among those nominated. While Chris would like to speak to his fans directly about this and other issues, pending legal proceedings preclude his doing so at this time. Once the matter before him has been resolved, he intends to do so."
I'm dying to know what he has to say on this issue.
"We are confirming that Chris Brown has decided to withdraw his nominations from the Kids' Choice Awards," says a statement Nickelodeon issued. "We agree with and respect his decision, and are looking forward to presenting a great event for our audience."
So basically, if he had not withdrawn his own name, he would still be on the ballot. Two days ago Nickelodeon network said it had no plans to remove Chris Brown as a nominee for its annual Kids' Choice Awards. Lovely, children's network.
Their defense was that "like all our KCA nominees, Chris Brown was nominated by kids several months ago based on his body of work as a performer, and the kids who vote will ultimately decide who wins in the category."
The lovely Lisa de Moraes, The Washington Post TV Columnist, had this to say on the issue:
Let's look at the Kids' Choice Awards for a moment, shall we?
Kids do not actually do the nominating, in the same way members of, say, the TV academy do the nominating at the Emmys. Nickelodeon employs a pollster, which polls kids and comes up with a national sample, and Nickelodeon decides which performers, movies, video games, etc., become nominees based on the sample, according to Nick. Actual voting is then done at Nickelodeon's Web site. And when Nickelodeon says "the kids who vote will ultimately decide who wins in the category," by "kids," it means "anyone with access to a computer."

Boo, Nickelodeon, for not making the first move on this.

It would be nice to believe it was actually the kid himself who decided to withdraw. More likely it was his legal/pr team. Still, they had more sense than Nickelodeon, right?

I'm glad someone decided to kick him off the ballot, whomever it was. Except for the part about Rihanna's name on the ballot--I know she's the victim, BUT I don't think her name being off the ballot is a bad thing. Nor do I think she deserves to "not win an award b/c Cris Brown beat her."
She IS in a helluva lot of controversery right now and being, in my opinon, very stupid by "taking Cris back" (or whatever you call what's going on) for his promise of $10 million if he slips up again, ever. Seriously, what kind of message does that send to Nickeloden veiwers even if they aren't the ones really doing the nominating? (Yes she is the victim. Yes the whole situation is jacked and I, personally, don't think either one of them should be in front of the children public-that makes my head explode-just sayin')
