Pick My Friday Night, Part Two

TimeTravelersWife_poster_thumb-thumb-550x355-19446  You sent me to see (500) Days of Summer recently, and that was a Very Wise Choice. (Review here!) In fact, why I haven't been asking you to make all my daily decisions (what to eat, what to wear, so on, so forth) is beyond me. You're obviously better qualified than I am as I would have chosen The Ugly Truth because looking at Gerard Butler for any amount of time makes me very happy. Well, I'm squeezing in a movie this weekend, and I need your help again. Choices are below, so cast your vote accordingly and then promptly donate some money to the popcorn fund. (Or just vote. Whatever.) I'll watch whatever the majority decides upon. (Again, Orphan is not a choice because I like to sleep without night terrors.)

1. Funny People -- Kurt wrote up a pretty fantastic review of this movie just last week, and although usually a movie that is more than two hours long would be just too damn long for me (LIKE AUSTRALIA, OH MY GOD, THAT WAS THE LONGEST MOVIE I'VE EVER SEEN AND THEREFORE IT SUCKED), now that movies are truly an escape for me (time away from changing diapers), a lengthy movie is surprisingly appealing.

2. Julie & Julia -- I like cooking. I like blogging. But I don't like Amy Adams' hair in this movie at all. I fear this could ruin it completely for me, and I'm not even kidding, which should give you a wee glimpse into just how insane I really am. Also, I find the title more tongue-tying and irritating than catchy and cute.

3. The Time Traveler's Wife -- I have been eagerly and very, very impatiently waiting for this movie's release. It was originally set to open LAST CHRISTMAS, which was a very long time ago. I enjoyed the book a lot, and I really want this movie to be good, but I fear it might fall short. So, I want to see it, definitely, but I also fear I may hate it. Although my love for Eric Bana knows no bounds.

4. Spread -- You should know, I don't hate Ashton Kutcher as much as I probably should, and I've actually heard a couple early good things about this film, so I've added it to the list.

So ... what do you think? What should I see this weekend?

Anya

The Time Travelers Wife. Just because I think it looks really good too, but also am afraid it may fall short. So if you see it you can do a review here and I will know if I should spend the money :)

Jennie

Absolutely. I will review whatever you lovelies pick!

BaltimoreGal

I am with Anya on this one!

cindy w

I vote for the Time Travelers Wife too. Mainly because of Eric Bana. OMG yum.

Anonymous New York

I saw Funny People and it was not very good. I love all the actors and some of the lines were funny, but over all it was pretty depressing and looooong. Sports Fan didn't like it either. Go with Time Traveler's Wife. I liked the book. Try not to picture Bana as the Hulk.

Jennie

Cindy, oh god, I KNOW!

Daffodil Campbell

I would go with Julie and Julia because I don't think I can handle another movie-based-on-a-novel that was utterly disappointing. I have a lot riding on Time Traveler's Wife, and not a lot invested in my dreams of Julia Child.

At least with Julie and Julia there will be food, and maybe some inspiration. Let me know if you end up de-boning a chicken or following a 7-page recipe for bread.

Andi

I have heard that Funny People was quite a let down and if you really want to see it, I would wait until it's out on DVD.

I, too want to see Time Traveler's Wife, but am in the middle of the book, so I will hold off. But I know it will top my list of movies to see shortly after. Although, movies are never as good as the books, so go into it with an open mind. I also don't like crying in pubic, so I don't know that I would see it in the theater, but I am hoping you do, so I can hear how it was....without too many spoilers! :)

I would hold off on Julie and Julia since it seems cute, but more of a weekend rental type of movie. I like to see action movies on the big screen. Ones with lots of excitement. Ones that I just don't get the same effect from seeing at home!

But of luck on your weekend plans! :)

Jennie

Thanks, Andi.

For some reason, I love seeing all kinds of movies in the theater. I really
don't know why as it's cheaper at home, you can pause/stop, you can make
your own snacks that don't cost nine kajillion dollars. But I just love
movie theaters.

Kerri Anne

I vote Funny People based on what movie I think will be best, but I'm a perpetual sucker for seeing movies opening weekend, so The Time Traveler's Wife would be a good second choice, for me.

Jennifer

I would go with "Spread."

Oh, and I really enjoyed 500 days of summer.

Sourire11

I vote time traveler's wife. It's my all time fave book so I, too, am terrified they just turned it into a hollywood romcom and destroyed it. But I'm thinking Eric Bana was the perfect casting choice for Henry so that's a good start.

kyslp

Time Traveler's Wife. If it is half as good as the book, it will still be enjoyable.

Sherri

Funny People was awful and depressing. I was let down by this one. I really thought it would be better. I'd go for Julie & Julia because I've heard amazing things about it. Just ignore Amy Adams hair. It does look awful in that one.

Sarah

Either time travelers wife (great book) or Julie and Julia, I'd like to see both at some point.

BaltimoreGal

Also NOT "Spread". That's just wrong.

Alyssa

Time Traveler's Wife! For purely selfish reasons-- I am scared, too and want a review before I spend the money. Plus, dude, you know you want to see it. Treat yourself. Or maybe I would just feel bad sending you to a movie you didn't really want to see because movies are like the equivalent of other peoples' two week vacations for me since we moved and I lost my baby-sitter (Ahem. 4 months ago. I know, make some friends already, loser.)

JennC

As much as I like Rachel McAdams, Nicholas Sparks movies just don't do anything for me. I saw Julie and Julia last week and loved it, I highly reccommend it. Meryl Streep is hilarious, and made a fantastic Julia Child. Just, uh, don't go on an empty stomach.

Jennie

Nicholas Sparks didn't write The Time Traveler's Wife, Audrey Niffenegger
did, but I agree that his books do very little for me either, except force
me to roll my eyes at the level of cheesiness and sap.

duchessbelle

Time Traveler's Wife gets my vote. I have such high hopes, but think I need someone else to see it first so I can prepare myself to either sit off to the side by myself so no one will see me doing the gasping sobbing thing I did when reading the book or so I know not to get popcorn for fear I will throw it at the movie screen. Is it wrong that I'm almost more interested in Rachel McAdams hair than I am Eric Bana?

Meghan

Time Traveler's Wife!

Jennie

She does have really excellent hair, I'll give you that.

NGS

Time Traveler's Wife for the same reasons as Alyssa. You watch it and tell me if it's any good. Cuz I'm scared myself. :)

caleal

Funny People was... weird... I wasn't as let down by it as everyone seemed to be, and I did think it was funny... but it's like, two weeks later, and I still can't tell you if I liked it or not. That's usually not a good sign.

I vote The Time Travelers Wife. Not because I want to see it, because my GOD it looks like a pile of crap (to me- not my kind of movie), but because I do love Rachel McAdams and think you want to see it most.

(Hate Amy Adams hair in that movie. It would ruin it for me, too.)

Sharon

I vote for Time Traveler's Wife - it looks incredible. I don't like sobbing in theatres, but sometimes a good sob-fest is exactly what you need. Having never read the book (as a book lover, I'm totally ashamed of that fact), I'm debating whether I should read the book first and possibly be disappointed by the movie, or see the movie first, then love the book a million times more. Gah.

I must also echo the love for Eric Bana, and Rachel McAdams' hair. Good lord is it ever gorgeous!!
