First Episode of HBO's Bored to Death Online
Now that True Blood and Weeds are over for the year and with Big Love and The United States of Tara still on hiatus, I'm starting to twitch a little at night when it's time to hunker down and watch a few shows. Sure, I still have Entourage and Mad Men for a few more weeks and Californication is returning this Sunday, but I feel like I need a little more cushioning from the boob tube. I was not terribly in love with Hung, so I'm cautiously excited about their latest comedy, Bored to Death.
Jason Schwartzman, Ted Danson, and Zach Galifianakis star in the "noir-otic" comedy about Brooklyn writer Jonathan Ames (Schwartzman). His girlfriend, Suzanne (Olivia Thirlby), has just broken up with him due to his failure to quit partaking in the booze and the weed. The break-up is just the latest downturn in his life, which is currently stagnating due to his inability to finish his novel or to take his day jobs more seriously.
After Suzanne moves out, Jonathan happens upon his copy of Raymond Chandler's Farewell, My Lovely. Reading the book inspires him to put an ad on Craigslist offering his services as a private detective. Presumably, hijinks ensue.
The series is the creation of writer Jonathan Ames. I'll be upfront and tell you that I know next to nothing about the dude or his work, but from what I can tell (and based on the fact that the creator and the main character have the same name) the show is somewhat autobiographical.
From what I've seen in the previews, this show could either be really funny or really dull. And I'm always unsure about Schwartzman, even though I've ended up liking him in just about everything. I think it's the fact that he seems perpetually 15 years old and wearing his dad's clothes or something. However, I will say that I am always impressed with his on-screen kisses. When he plants one on Rita in The Darjeeling Limited, I always have to fan myself and his desperate farewell kiss with Suzanne in the first episode of Bored to Death is just sublime. Sigh.
Anyway.
Perhaps sensing my apprehension, HBO has kindly allowed the first episode to be available to view online. Check it out on Amazon and let me know what you think.

It's gonna be hard for me not to love it, since it has Zach Galifianakis in it.
On a side note, LOVING the September mix on MamaPop Radio!

Excuse me, but did I miss your "Weeds" finale recap? I've asked about this before. What can I say, I need to TALK IT OUT.
