Rihanna Speaking Out About Assault

Rihanna

Rihanna is finally speaking out about her assault by Chris Brown.  She is on the cover of this month's Glamour magazine as Glamour's 2009 Woman of the Year and will also be on Good Morning America and 20/20 this week.  I'm so glad she is not letting Chris Brown have the final word.

Rihanna told Glamour-

"My story was broadcast all over the world for people to see," she says. "They have followed every step of my recovery. "The positive thing that has come out of my situation is that people can learn from that. I want to give as much insight as I can to young women, because I feel like I represent a voice that really isn't heard. Now I can help speak for those women."

As for the massive scrutiny following the February 2009 attack, Rihanna says, "I went to sleep as Rihanna and woke up as Britney Spears. That was the level of media chaos that happened the next day."

And, she says, the past nine months have been a source of growth and strength. "I am stronger, wiser and more aware. You don't realize how much your decisions affect people you don't even know, like fans."

Asa a parent, and a victim of dating violence, I would really like to see her go talk to victims of teen violence about her experience.  That would be something really great that could come from this mess.

I don't want to be cynical, and I do have my DVR set for her interviews on GMA and 20/20 this week. I just can't forget that they were together at P. Diddy's shortly after the incident, and that she didn't want a restraining order. Sounds like she may have done an about-face, and I sincerely hope so. Someone as well-known as her, coming out to speak to abused teens and women - as one of them - could do so much good. I am glad she's talking now, and look forward to hearing what she has to say.

I am glad to see her handling this so well. She is very young and came from a very sheltered past and I can't imagine what this has been like.
