Spike Jonze Slaps Kanye West
Well, not really, but in a viral promotion video for a short film collaboration between the two, Jonze answers the eternal question that Rick James reportedly posed to Charlie Murphy one night, long ago, in the China Club. That question, of course, being, "What did the five fingers say to the face?"
Jonze and West came together to make the short film, "We Were Once a Fairytale," which serves as a sort of music video for West's song, "See You in My Nightmares," off of his album 808s & Heartbreak. The short film depicts a drunken and belligerent West stumbling through a night club, pissing off friends and making everyone uncomfortable. He retires to the bathroom where things get characteristically bizarre in the way that is so very Spike Jonze. The short film is available on iTunes, and you can watch most of it here, at least for as long as it remains viewable. Do be warned that there is some NSFW language and barfing of rose petals and mouse seppuku. You know...the usual.
The film seems to make a pretty stark statement about West's fame and how he feels about it. Like Sweetney, I stand in defense of West because I can't help but admire just how little of a fuck the guy gives. Mainstream music has become such a wasteland of diluted Target-ready nonsense that, even if his music still isn't that great, he's at least bucking the trend of being a zombie, like most of his contemporaries, and at least taking a stab at something interesting.
Anyway, to promote the film, Jonze and West created this viral video that is supposed to be some behind-the-scenes footage of Jonze attempting to direct West, who is furiously texting and not paying the slightest attention. Jonze then fulfills the fantasies of Taylor Swift and most of the MamaPop writing staff.

It's just a promo-video?! I thought it was the real deal to which I would've said: "THANK YOU SPIKE JONZE, IT'S ABOUT DAMN TIME!"
