Whoa. Cool, man...Wait, what?

You Win Again DreamWorks Animation

Well, well, well. "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa" was number one at the box office this weekend.

Score another one for the geniuses behind the advertising blitz that is the must see "Madagascar 2" brainwashing machine.

Madagascar_2

To be fair, I have not (yet) seen "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa" but will all the commercials airing on the networks that my kids watch I would imagine a trip to the theater is imminent.

The first movie was great. My kids love it and it made me laugh, but I ask you, MamaPopians, when is

The Simpsons: TV's Longest-Running Primetime Series Gets Renewed

Key_art_the_simpsons

Let me start this post by admitting something to you: I haven't watched The Simpsons in years. I'm not sure why that is exactly -- perhaps I outgrew the show, or the show outgrew me? In any case, beyond viewing (and quite enjoying) the recent film adaptation of the series, The Simpsons hasn't been a significant part of my televisual world for quite some time.

So why, when I look at those bright primary-yellow googley-eyed cartoon heads, do I still feel such genuine affection?

New Animated Peanuts Clips for Those of Us Who Twitch In Between Holiday Specials

Peanuts

There are many things to love about the holiday season that starts for much of America in October. Food is everywhere, family gatherings provide much needed bonding, and the country seems to collectively take a break.

For me, one of the best parts of the season are the Peanuts specials on TV.

The Princess Identity

I was reading something the other day about the re-release of Sleeping Beauty, how it compared to other Disney princess movies, and what these movies teach our daughters...

The Life & Times of Tim, oh, and Dr. Katz.

Tim

Early Prediction: The term most frequently used when describing this new HBO series will be “quirky.”

Starting September 28th there’s going to be a new animated series on HBO called The Life & Times of Tim. If you liked the series Dr. Katz Professional Therapist, that ran on Comedy Central from 1995-1999, then you’ll really enjoy this show.

Japanese Animator Hayao Miyazaki Keeps It Surreal

Ponyo_on_a_cliff

Perhaps the most renowned Japanese anime director, Hayao Miyazaki is responsible for films such as Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. His current project, Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea is a modern take on the story of The Little Mermaid, with a goldfish who wishes to become a human girl. The exceptional thing about the film, however, is that Miyazaki says the film was done without computer animation, each frame drawn in crayon, by hand.

Cartoon Monkeys I Have Known

Blip

I've known a lot of cartoon monkeys, and I want to talk about two of them. I have my reasons.

Above you see Blip, cartoon monkey sidekick of Space Ghost. I am made at times to watch Space Ghost (no, Space Ghost Coast to Coast is not acceptable to the six-year-old, who does not appreciate irony), and I find myself really digging on Blip. Blip's awesome, y'all. I can't really understand why there's a monkey in space, but he sure comes in handy: sneaking up on Inviso-power to give Space Ghost back his power bands and untie Jan and Jace.

I wish I had an awesome monkey who could turn invisible. Not a real monkey, because that's kind of awful, but an animated monkey, or perhaps a sophisticated robot facsimile. We could wear matching unitards and masks. He could hand me things I need when I am incapacitated.

Thanksblip

Thanks, Blip!

There's only one other monkey as awesome as Blip.

Friday Time Suck, Courtesy of YouTube!

Youtube_grab You definitely want to go over to check out the 2007 YouTube Video Award winners. There are only twelve categories and it's Friday so you can probably blow off your last hour of work for some classic Web diversion -- that is, it will take an hour only if you don't watch all the runners-up.

I don't know which is my favorite: Human Tetris (winner in the Creative category) or the entire Eyewitness category, with everything from fires to lightening striking to a truly horrifying video of a student getting tasered.

After the jump, a cute one called "How We Met."

Pixar's WALL-E: The Next Great Drain On Parent's Pocketbooks Everywhere

Screenshot

Parents, prepare yourselves for Pixar's newest offering -- WALL-E -- coming in June to delight your children and drain dry your financial resources with its many related products and by-products. The film's stilted official plot synopsis, for your synopsisizing enjoyablementation, follows:

The year is 2700. WALL•E, a robot, spends every day doing what he was made for. But soon, he will discover what he was meant for. From Academy Award®-winning director, Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo), WALL•E is the story of one robot’s comic adventures as he chases his dream across the galaxy.

Basically it boils down to a cute, lonely robot finding love with another cute robot. And my daughter is gonna eat that shit up, of course. Those Pixar people are evil geniuses, I tell ya.

Full theatrical trailer of wide-eyed robocuteness after the jump... If you're smart, you'll start socking away pennies now in preparation for your kid's WALL-E  -related needs come June. Jus sayin'.

Spongebob Voice-Overs Of Hilarity

Spongebob

Parents, I think most of you will agree with me when I say that among the Least Offensive and Brain-Damaging Children's Television Shows, Spongebob Squarepants surely ranks in the top five for palatability for us adult-types. The show is just effing funny. Period. Silly, surreal, and sometimes a little dopey, yes -- but effing funny nonetheless. Which is why you're going to enjoy what's after the jump just as much (if not more! Siriously!) than your kid(s) will.

Gyllenhall + Namath = Go Jets!

Namath_250_3 Variety reports that Jake Gyllenhaal is going to play football superhero Joe Namath in an upcoming biopic that's been approved by Namath himself, who believes that Gyllenhall has the athleticism to pull off playing the boy with the golden arm from Beaver Falls, PA. One of the highest paid professional football players of the 60s and 70s and a true spotlight hog who at least once sat on the sidelines during a game wearing -- is that mink? Chinchilla? -- (and I know I'm the only one here old enough to remember his pantyhose commercials), this sounds like a great project for Gyllenhaal so I hope nobody fucks it up. Dave Hollander will write the script once the strike is over.

Meanwhile, our Adorable Animation Desk reports . . .

Your Friend The Rat

This completely awesome 11-minute long featurette from the DVD of Pixar's "Ratatouille" is perhaps the single best piece of animation I've seen in years. Combining animation styles from the past fifty or more years, it's gorgeous, joyful, and edumacational to boot! You gotta watch it, for serious. Please to enjoy, with mah compliments, betches!

Neat Internet Find for the Day

While browsing around YouTube not long ago, I found this really interesting claymation video for the classic Nina Simone song "My Baby Just Cares for Me." I have no idea who made the video or why, but it's a very sweet interpretation of one of my most favorite songs.

Dubya — Even Funnier as a Cartoon!

I had this really great post about my new favorite show, Lil' Bush on Comedy Central, and just as I was about to save it, my browser locked up and I lost it. Grrrr!

Well anyway, all I really wanted to say that while the show does poke a lot of irreverent fun at Dubya, Dicky, Rummy and Condi, they take plenty of pokes at some of my favorite Dems, as well. It's an equal opportunity poker, actually, and thus EVERYONE can watch and enjoy, tonight at 10:30pm Eastern!

Here's a short clip... Little George meets Little Tony Blair for the first time after they both don't make the football team.

You are please to be watching now.
